Koh Kred is the perfect place to get away from the hussle and bussle of Bangkok. It is a small man made island located on the Chao Phraya river just 20km North of Bangkok. The island has made a name for itself mainly due to its production of Mon pottery.

Getting to the island is an adventure in itself. You can either take the boat from Saphan Taksin or a taxi/bus to Pak Kret before getting a small boat. The main attraction is that once on the island there are no cars. Your only travel options are walking the 6 km island by foot or hiring one of the inexpensive bikes. Should you be feeling a little lazier, some motorbike taxis are also available.

A narrow, concrete walkway runs the circumference of the island, weaving between greenery, palm trees, houses, markets, pottery and coffee shops. The walk around the island will take approximately 1.5 hours.

The same rich soil that allows for the palms and greenery, is also used for the production of the famous pottery. Around the walk you will encounter several shops selling pottery as well as work shops, kilns and work houses to take a peek in.

Near the river there are many chedis and temples, as well as, restaurants, cafes and bars to stop in for a bite to eat or a refreshing drink. A busy market can also be found in this area selling everything from souvenirs, pottery, food and drinks to clothes, bags and accessories. This market is particularly worth visiting at the weekend.
