Step into this restaurant tucked away on soi 36 and feel like you stepped out of Bangkok. The setting resembles an authentic teak house with friendly waiters, traditional decoration and highly entertaining performances. The food is good and it guarantees for a fun evening out. We will definitely be returning when we have friends come and visit us in Bangkok.
The menu is extensive, but mainly Isaan and Thai based. Therefore it may not be suitable for fussier eaters. A variety of som-tam and curry options are available, along with other more adventurous dishes featuring on the menu such as frog salad, duck beaks, crocodile, grilled beef tongue and ant eggs (unless these are actually mistranslations…) You may be disappointed to hear that for some of these ‘delicacies’ you have to wait until they are in season.
The main draw of Vientienne is the entertainment. From 7.30 -10pm every evening there is live entertainment for the diners. We absolutely loved it and were thoroughly entertained. There is something to suit everyone. From traditional Thai dances to cheesy Thai pop songs to very unique instruments. What we enjoyed the most about the show, was that every act had a huge smile on their face and looked like they were enjoying every minute.
However, be aware there is also the option of audience participation! You can join in the singing and dancing or try the traditional bamboo dance (Kra Tob Mai).
The restaurant is set on three separate levels. You can sit at tables and chairs, or try the more traditional dining experience seated on cushions on the floor. Wherever you opt to sit, the layout of the restaurant allows for a great view of the stage.
We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
